-
- Baud rate is the number of symbols transmitted per second, where
- a symbol is the unit of transmission. bps means bits per second. The
- two are not identical.
-
- In some ancient modems, for example, the two were the same. For
- Bell 103 (North American, up to 300 bps) modulation, two distinct
- tones were used to represent bits which were zero or one. Each
- symbol, then, conveys one bit of information, and so the baud and bit
- rates for such a modem are the same.
-
- In more recent modulations, however, each symbol conveys
- more than one bit of modulation. Bell 212A (North American
- 1200 bps modems) uses phase shift keying in which four states
- are possible. Four states can represent two bits, and the
- baud rate of Bell 212A is 600 baud (though it transmits 1200 bps).
-
- Since then, the number of bits transmitted per symbol has
- continued to increase, as has the baud rate. V.32bis transmits
- six bits per symbol, so it achieves a bit rate of 14.4 kbps
- using a baud rate of 2400 bps (2400 * 6 = 14 400). V.34 goes
- even farther.
-
- On a standard serial cable, each bit is represented by
- a positive or negative voltage, and the bit rate and baud
- rate are the same.
-
- This topic is not a mail issue; it's a telecom issue, so
- I've crossposted into and set followups to
- comp.dcom.modems - Data communications hardware and software.
